Glasdy   |   New Build Passive House

Bethel, Gwynedd, 2024

It's funny how life can go full circle. Chris' Design Technology teacher got in touch about a self-build project he wanted to undertake in his retirement. He presented us with a concept design and we got involved in making the project a reality. We ran the house through the Passive House Planning Package and made some alterations to ensure it doesn't over-heat.

The house is spread over three floors with a mezzanine on the top floor, which creates a double height space in the living space below. Having higher level living spaces allows stunning views of the landscape over the hedgerows. To reduce the building carbon footprint we will use Structurally Insulated Panels (SIPs) constructed with local timber and insulated with cellulose. The house will be clad predominantly in larch, then left to weather for a year before deciding whether to stain it black. A photovoltaic array will generate energy, as well as offset the energy consumption of the air source heat pump.
